This website caters to both advanced and novice users. So in addition to articles like fixing Modsecparse.pl cronjob errors I also need to hit the basics. One command that many webmasters know, have used in the past, but forget how to use is the tar command. How does one “untar” a file? What if it has been compressed with gzip or bzip2? Don’t some of you wish that you had a site where you could reference an easy to understand reference to these compression formats? Well, look no further! You could bookmark this particular post, but why bother when you can just bookmark the site as a whole and reference this later on in the Webmaster Wiki? Linux commands (done via command line or SSH) will be linked directly from the main page of the wiki and resides here. A guide to the Tar command can then be reached from there. So here are the basics that will help you extract those tar files you often download from places like Sourceforge:

What Is A Tarball?

A tarball is an archive of files and/or directories. If a tarball is gzip’d or bz2′d, then it has been compressed.

“Untar” A File

If you are dealing with a tarball (example.tar) file, you can extract the files from it using:

tar xvf example.tar

If the tarball has been gzipped(example.tar.gz), you can extract the files from it using:

tar xvfz example.tar.gz

If the tarball has been gzipped(example.tgz), you can extract the files from it using:

tar xzvf example.tgz

If the tarball has been compressed with bzip2(example.tar.bz2), then you will need to have bzip2 installed. ( Most servers will have this, but if yours does not, visit http://www.bzip.org/ ) If all is well and bzip2 is installed, you can extract the files from it using:

tar yxf example.tar.bz2

Sometimes you only want to extract certain directories from the tarball. An example of doing so would be:

tar xvzf example.tar.gz */DIRECTORY_YOU_WANT_REPLACES_THIS_TEXT/*

List The Contents

If you would like to see what is inside a tarball, you can use the command:

tar tvf example.tar

If you would like to see what is inside a gzip’d tarball, you can use the command:

tar tzf example.tar.gz

Tar It Up!

If you would like to tarball some files, you can do so by using the command:

tar cvf filename.tar files/directories

If you would like to tarball some files AND compress them (with gzip), you can do so by using the command:

tar cfz blah.tar.gz files/directories

DESCRIPTION
This manual page documents the GNU version of tar, an archiving program
designed to store and extract files from an archive file known as a
tarfile. A tarfile may be made on a tape drive, however, it is also
common to write a tarfile to a normal file. The first argument to tar
must be one of the options Acdrtux, followed by any optional functions.
The final arguments to tar are the names of the files or directories
which should be archived. The use of a directory name always implies
that the subdirectories below should be included in the archive.

EXAMPLES
       tar -xvf foo.tar
              verbosely extract foo.tar

       tar -xzf foo.tar.gz
              extract gzipped foo.tar.gz

       tar -cjf foo.tar.bz2 bar/
create bzipped tar archive of the directory bar called foo.tar.bz2

       tar -xjf foo.tar.bz2 -C bar/
extract bzipped foo.tar.bz2 after changing directory to bar

       tar -xzf foo.tar.gz blah.txt
extract the file blah.txt from foo.tar.bz2

BUGS
The GNU folks, in general, abhor man pages, and create info documents
instead. The maintainer of tar falls into this category. Thus this man
page may not be complete, nor current, and was included in the Red Hat CVS
tree because man is a great tool . This man page was first taken
from Debian Linux and has since been lovingly updated here.

REPORTING BUGS
       Please report bugs via https://bugzilla.redhat.com

SEE ALSO
The full documentation for tar is maintained as a Texinfo manual. If
the info and tar programs are properly installed at your site, the command

              info tar

should give you access to the complete manual.

I have decided to scratch the idea of two separate Wiki’s and run a single Wiki for both server administration and web page design. I will simply call it the Webmaster Wiki. I put some finishing touches on it today and really only have some minor edits to do across the various pages now. I added a page of HTML Elements and a list of PHP Functions, then laid a little bit of framework for additions I will make soon such as SSH Commands.

The groundwork for the website is almost complete and next week should be devoted entirely to content.

However, I was correct in that I have a handle on it now and took care of all the skinning today. I have a few extensions to install yet and some minor modifications to make and then I will be setting up the second Wiki. Should be able to take care of all of that tomorrow and get the ball rolling. Once that is complete I have a few minor items to take care of (advertising page, about page, etc) and then the official release! Once released I can get to work on the real content and blog about more substantial items than just “status reports”.

Looking forward to Friday!

I really like MediaWiki and think that it was a good choice for what I want to do with it. I didn’t get a whole lot of skinning done today, but I feel that I have a good handle on it now and will likely get it done tomorrow. If all goes well, Thursday I will be working on content, and Friday I will be doing a public release of the site.

Today I installed an ad rotation plugin and got it working in my other script as well. Using similar methods I will be adding other widgets to the other portions of the website. Tomorrow I will be working on setting up “the big list” of ad agencies and then inputting more agencies into the database. This is, of course, assuming that I have not made any progress on converting my phpbb2 install to phpbb3. I’m having an issue with the conversion process which is causing all PMs to be lost. It’s a big (250MB+) database, so it isn’t exactly a quick conversion. My hope is to have PHP5 and MySQL5 installed next week and begin work on the Wiki’s.

The time line which I am currently working to follow is:

19th-23rd: Finish script upgrades/conversions.

19th-23rd: Install MediaWiki’s

19th-23rd: Skin MediaWIki’s

19th-23rd: Finish Ad Agency Listings

26th-30th: Begin work on Wiki Content

26th-30th: Finishing Touches

26th-30th: Public Release of The Webmaster’s Edge

I updated to WSNLinks Alpha 5 today. Ran into several errors that made it pretty much unusable. It is alpha though, so that is to be expected. Reverted back about 10 minutes ago and all is back to normal. I really would like to use the alpha for phpbb3 integration, but that doesn’t appear to be fully functional yet either. I reported all of the bugs I encountered and hopefully Paul will take a look at it soon. If the bugs I reported are fixed for Alpha 6, I will likely be trying another upgrade.

The main reason for testing the alpha is because I need to upgrade Forums.ModemHelp.Net to phpbb3. However my copy of WSNLinks on Portal.ModemHelp.Net is integrated with the copy of phpbb2 on Forums. The current release of WSNLinks does not support phpbb3 integration, but the next version will, hence the need for the alpha.

I can’t really release this website until those are upgraded as I need to upgrade to php5 in order for MediaWiki to be installed. What I may end up doing is just adding some modifications to phpbb2 in order for it to work under php5 as an interim solution. I’d really like to upgrade to phpbb3 though for better Spam control, among other reasons.

At some point, some of you may ask how the idea for The Webmaster’s Edge started. It actually started quite some time ago, but was put on hold due to other projects. I had posted a list of ad networks to a private forum that I and John Chow belonged to and he asked if he could post it to his blog JohnChow.com. I said this would be fine and he said that in return he would promote my Webmaster Resource Site once I launched it. His post can be found on his site here. The list started with ~130 Ad Agencies and I have been growing it since that time. I will be integrating the list that I have been keeping since that time into the “Ad Network Listings” section of this site.

It has been about a year and a half since I spoke with John about this site and I am hoping that he still would like to give me the “John Chow Bump” (ala The Colbert Bump?) with a blurb about this site on his Blog once I go public with it.

In the beginning the Ad Network Listing will have brief descriptions of each Ad Network, but will eventually include detailed reviews and interviews. It has an open rating system and comment system for Webmaster’s to discuss their experiences with these Networks and give the Networks themselves a chance to respond to these comments.

I will begin filling in the Ad Network details this week and should probably be able to finish inserting the information I currently have sometime next week. By that time I will hopefully have made the necessary PHP and MySQL upgrades for MediaWiki and then can begin fleshing those out. Once I have the templates finished and a few entries made, I will begin promotion, search engine submission, and can begin getting into the “real meat” of the site.
