Promoting Your Website: A Recap

I have been posting various ways to promote your website over the past few months and those posts are scattered throughout the archives. In order to highlight these posts, I thought I would give you all a recap of what I have gone over so far.

It is worth noting that ALL of these methods discussed are FREE ways to promote your website.

The most important thing to concentrate on though is quality content. I cannot stress this enough! If your site isn’t worth visiting then it will not retain visitors and all of the promotion you do is wasted.

A Correction On: Three Way Link Exchanging VS Double Link Exchanging

Yesterday I posted about Three Way Link Exchanging VS Double Link Exchanging and made an error in the article as pointed out here by The Quantum Mechanic. I have made the proper corrections and I apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

Three Way Link Exchanging VS Double Link Exchanging

As I mentioned the other day, I would like to know if anyone is interested in a “three way link exchange”. It is worth noting that I am not doing a traditional three way link exchange, but a modified one that I will refer to as a Double Link Exchange.

The Wrong Way

The traditional three way link exchange is performed as follows:

Website A >link> Website B >link> Website C >link> Website A

While this may be the true definition of a three way link exchange, it is EASILY detectable and will likely be detected by Google in the future (if not already). Due to this, three way link exchanges really don’t seem very beneficial.

The “Right” Way: Double Link Exchange

Rather than calling this the right way, it may also be described as the better way. Here’s how it works:

Website A >link> Website B
Website C >link> Website A

The difference is that it cuts the “third link” from the equation. However, it requires one of the two parties to have two websites. The webmaster with two pages will have one website that already has a high ranking (Website C) and a website whose rank they wish to increase (Website B).

The Proposition

As noted in my previous post, I am the Webmaster who owns Website B and Website C. I am looking for Webmasters who own a single Website A which has a moderate pagerank (PR3 or greater, though PR1 and PR2 sites will be considered) to engage in this exchange. I will like to your site from my PR5 Website C if you link to The Webmaster’s Edge (Website B). These links can be provided in many ways (blog posts, friends link, etc) and I am open to suggestions.

The Edge Is Now NoFollow Free!

You may have recently noticed that there is now a band at the top of the page which says “NOFOLLOW FREE”. This is placed by the NoFollow Free Plugin. It doesn’t mean that your author link will immediately have the “nofollow” tag removed from them, but it does mean that it will be removed from frequent visitors. If you post 3 or more comments on The Webmaster’s Edge, you will have the rel=nofollow attribute removed.

Please note that this Blog IS moderated and that it DOES have anti-spam software, and any spam posts WILL be removed, if not immediately blocked. This plugin is my way of rewarding frequent commentators for their patronage.

For those who consider using this plugin: I highly recommend against it unless you moderate your Blog and have really good anti-spam plugins. A nofollow-free Blog can be a target for spammers. Hopefully this doesn’t make my Blog too large a target or the plugin will have to be removed. THough I highly doubt that it will be an issue.

Promoting The Edge Part Twelve: The Domain Name

Technically I’ve already done this, but it is an important topic that should be discussed.

Your Domain

Your domain name is an exceedingly important part of your website. While this is not always the best case for certain sites, you should try to choose a domain name that is both relevant and descriptive of your site and content. Whatever your domain is, it needs to be memorable and easy to spell. The easier it is to remember, the better the chance you will get return visitors who simply type in your URL. I chose webmastersedge.net as the domain for The Webmaster’s Edge. I chose it because it is not too long of a domain name (the shorter the better!!) and I find it descriptive of the content.

ALSO get the WRONG domain!!!!!

Getting the wrong domain can also be important. I chose to also register other domain names such as webmasteredge.net (no s) and thewebmastersedge.net. You can use common misspellings or incorrect domains that users might type in to prevent them from going to another site, and to make sure they get to yours. For example, the site is “The Webmaster’s Edge”, so I could see people typing in the “the”, thus the reason for thewebmastersedge.net.

Highlighting Word Importance

The more importance you place on the words in your domain name, the better. This makes the domain even more memorable. For example, when I placed the URLs for The Edge in the header, I placed importance on the words through capitalization. Instead of writing webmastersedge.net, I wrote WebmastersEdge.Net. This helps to better define the domain and increase repeat visitors.

Closing Thoughts

While content is really the most important part of your website, if your domain is memorable you’ll get more repeat traffic. Make it easy for your users. Everything you can do it make your website more “sticky”, do it! While it may be a bit late for your current domain name, make certain to pick a sticky domain name for your next one. You won’t regret it.

Everyone knows that Google isn’t very kind to you when you exchange links. Reciprocal links might as well not count at all as far as Google is concerned. While reciprocal links are still GREAT for promoting your site, it isn’t good for search engine rankings. Therefore, a good way to maximize your ranking you need to use a “three way link exchange”.

Since this site is new, it doesn’t really have a pagerank yet, but I have another technology website that is PR5.

Promoting The Edge Day One: Search Engine Submissions

While I am already bringing in search engine traffic, it certainly can’t hurt to submit the site to them. To do so, I decided to use a submission engine that I have used in the past at:

I found the submission page a long while back because I was an avid user of Evrsoft 1stpage. After the new version came out, I ditched it. Really it was a nice editor, but had some serious memory leak issues, among other things and the support for it seemed to drop off the face of the earth immediately after release.
