This past Saturday there was an explosion at my old Server Host ThePlanet. It brought down over 9000 servers, though luckily none of the servers were actually damaged. They’ve had a tough time getting the servers back online however due to the nature of the explosion and the need to turn the power off and keep it off as well as other factors. It looks like around 90% or more of the servers are now back online. Here are some news postings about it:

Houston Chronicle
SlashDot

Can’t really blame them though, you can only have so much redundancy and an issue of this nature can really “bunk” things up. I just hope noone was hurt. While they were a good host, I found some better pricing from a really fast growing host that is close to home. Liquidweb is by far the best host I’ve ever had, with the best support, and best prices. I recommend them over all others and if you are shopping for a Dedicated Server, you should check them out today!

Buy a server from Liquidweb.

9000 servers that is pretty massive. I blame it on the moths.

lol, I’d say! :-) They took a pretty big hit to their datacenter. I know some popular websites had to have been affected, I wonder which. According to:
http://www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/7011131199

“No injuries were reported and no servers were damaged or lost.”

So that’s good news at least. More information on the outage can be found at:
http://service-update.theplanet.com/

If my server was still with ThePlanet I’m pretty certain it would have been affected by this. Hopefully other providers will be able to learn from this major outage and it will help them prevent themselves from suffering a similar fate.

Maybe they will learn not to make the blade towers out of sodium next time.
